On August 16, 2006, Sgt. Shawn Gianforte, a native of Caledonia, and Sgt. Jerome Fenner were arrested after a home invasion in Virginia Beach. The two Marines broke into the home of Dan Shain and Debbie Maloney-Shain, accusing them of being terrorists, threatening to murder the couple and beating Dan Shain. Gianforte was sentenced to two years in prison.
